Così cantavano i Lino e Mistoterital nella seconda metà degli anni '80. John Wayne è l'icona dei film western, e l'inarrivabile totem del machismo USA. Per uno strano scherzo del destino, pur non avendo mai indossato una uniforma fuori dal set, fu una delle vittime della guerra fredda.

Trasferitosi dal freddo Iowa alla California per problemi di salute del padre, Marion Robert Morrison dovette presto contribuire al bilancio familiare. The Duke ottenne la prima menzione sui titoli con il western "The Big Trail" del 1930. Il western fu il suo cavallo di battaglia, con 79 film girati sui complessivi 164 accreditati.

Così come il suo periodo d'oro furono gli anni '30 con ben 70 partecipazioni in lungometraggi.

Una vittima inconsapevole della guerra fredda

Morì di tumore. Benché fosse un forte fumatore la causa della malattia fu una eccessiva esposizione alle radiazioni atomiche nel deserto del Nevada, durante le riprese de "Il conquistatore" (1956, dedicato alla figura di Gengis Khan). Secondo le statistiche metà della troupe morì per malattie connesse alla esposizione alle radiazioni.

In una vita dedicata al cinema un solo oscar. Per il ruolo del US Marshall Rooster Cogburn (Il Grinta).
